SUNY Potsdam senior Kathleen Frear was named the 2010-11 State University of New York Athletic Conference Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award winner for women’s lacrosse, the conference announced Monday at its annual spring awards banquet.
Frear, a Scotia, N.Y., native, became the first Potsdam student-athlete to earn the honor since 2006-07. She will graduate this weekend with a double major in communication and English literature, and plans to attend law school in the fall.
The SUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Award is given to a first- or second-team member of the all-conference team with the highest grade point average (3.3 or higher) for at least three semesters, as determined by the latest SUNYAC All-Academic Team and Commissioner’s List. A total of 24 of the league’s student-athletes, or one from each sport, were recognized.
Frear, a midfielder, earned second-team All-SUNYAC honors after starting all 16 games in 2011 for the Bears, totaling 13 caused turnovers and six points, including five goals. A key member of the Potsdam defense, she started 44 of the 46 contests in her three-year career with the team.
“Kathleen is key in our transition,” Potsdam coach Lauren Bruce said. “She sees the field very well and is one of the fastest athletes on the team. She is asked to mark out our opponent’s leading score, and over the years developed into our strongest takeaway
defender.”
As a member of the women’s soccer team last fall, Frear served as captain and helped the Bears tie a program record with 10 wins. She scored two goals and assisted on another in 16 games played, including 15 starts.
Last week, Frear received the athletic department’s Maxcy Molnar Award for her combination of sportsmanship, leadership, scholarship and athletic achievement.
