Walk-off sends Knights to loss in NCAA Regional opening round

Auburn, NY - With an opposite field hit that skipped just inside the third baseline, senior Kevin Curtis delivered a one-out walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give second-seeded Farmingdale State a 2-1 victory over the seventh-seeded Clarkson University Baseball team in the opening round of the NCAA New York Regional Wednesday night at Falcon Stadium.

The Golden Knights fell to 19-18 on the season, and will play sixth-seed Ramapo at 1:15 pm on Thursday afternoon. Farmingdale moved to 27-15 overall and will play again at 7:45 pm versus third-seed Keystone College.

Senior starting pitcher David Goerold (Clifton Park, NY) continued his recent dominance by tossing six shutout innings against the Rams, stranding seven runners in the process. He wasn't threatened until the fourth inning, but the righty induced a groundball double play to get out of a bases loaded jam, and then got out of another bases loaded situation in the sixth inning with another groundout.

Neither team could muster much offense in the steady drizzle that fell on Falcon Stadium. The game was delayed for about 30 minutes after the first two innings and more field work was necessary throughout the game. The pace certainly seemed to push the advantage to the pitchers as Goerold allowed only three hits in his six innings, while the Farmingdale starter Chris Phelan gave up only four in seven-plus innings.

Farmingdale would get on the scoreboard first when Danny Devito led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to center off reliever Vince Baldwin (Catskill, NY). Devito was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt and then took third on a groundout to the right side of the infield. Baldwin then struck out designated hitter David Zilnicki, but the ball scooted to the backstop to allow Devito to scamper home with the game's first run.

Clarkson responded immediately in the top of the next inning. Junior Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) crushed a ball that bounced off the wal in deep right center for a stand-up triple. Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) then joined Coleman on the basepaths when he was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for a line drive single by David Kinney (Mexico, NY) to tie the score at 1-1.

The Knights looked to take the lead in the top of the 10th inning as Lenney singled up the middle and Kinney followed to push Lenney to third, but a pop up in the infield finished the threat. In the bottom half of the inning, Clarkson reliever Pete Roma (Endicott, NY), who had thrown two shutout innings prior to the 10th, walked Zilnicki. After a sacrifice bunt, Curtis was able to deliver his hit down the left field line for the game-winning RBI.

Kinney went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Knights, pushing his hit total on the season up to 60 and his average to .411.
