Senior Alex Benway (Queensbury, NY) won his race for the Clarkson University Cross Country team and both Sara Artus (St. Regis Falls, NY) and Becca Brabec (Lemont, IL) helped lead the Clarkson University Volleyball team to a 4-0 conference week, and Monday afternoon the trio earned Liberty League Weekly Honors.
Benway won the SUNY Cortland Jack Daniels Shoot Out 6,000-meter race Saturday afternoon, crossing the finish line in 19 minutes, 12 seconds to pace the field by 18.9 seconds. That showing helped Benway, a Liberty League First-Team All-Star in 2010, earn the Liberty League Performer of the Week honor on Monday for the first time in 2011.
With an ailing setter struggling with a difficult cold, senior Sara Artus and freshman Becca Brabec helped take some of the pressure off with a big weekend for the Golden Knights' volleyball team. Artus struck for 53 kills and a .390 hitting percentage to be named the Liberty League Performer of the Week for the second straight seven-day stretch. In the process, Artus became Clarkson's all-time leader in kills, surpassing the 1,400 mark in her career. Brabec wasn't quite as prolific as the two-time AVCA All-American, but she showed why she is one of the best freshmen in the conference, posting 28 kills, 6 aces, and 18 digs. Brabec shared Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors for her performance.
