Three former SUNY Potsdam student-athletes will be inducted into the Bears Hall of Fame as part of the 2011 induction ceremony and luncheon on Saturday, July 16, at Knowles Hall on the SUNY Potsdam campus.

The induction ceremony takes place during the school’s annual Reunion Weekend from July 14-17.

Kregg Bruno, Renee (Hatter) Hook ’86 and Jodie (Schoppmann) Robertson ’06 will become the 31st class inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1979.

The program, which begins at 11:30 a.m., features a reception, luncheon and induction ceremony overseen by SUNY Potsdam athletic director James Zalacca.

Potsdam cross country coach Peter Cutler will present the award for Robertson, while Bruno will be inducted by former teammate Richard McAllister ‘83. Hook is unable to attend the ceremony due to a work conflict.

Kregg Bruno attended SUNY Potsdam from 1981-84 before moving on to Clinton Community College, where he earned an associate’s degree in applied science in 1987. During his three-year stint as a member of the Bears wrestling team, Bruno was an NCAA Division III All-American at 142 pounds in 1980-81 and an All-SUNYAC performer in 1981-82 and 1982-83. He was named to the All-New York State team in 1983 after placing fourth against competitors from all divisions. Bruno returned to Potsdam for the 1984-85 season as an assistant under head wrestling coach Neil Johnson. Bruno, 50, is currently a councilman in the town of Peru, N.Y., and has owned Bruno’s Painting Plus in Peru since November 2002. A native of Peru, Bruno also serves as an assistant wrestling coach at Peru Central School. He resides in Peru with his wife Bonnie and daughter Katie (18). His son Christopher (21) attends SUNY Cortland.

Renee (Hatter) Hook, an Endicott, N.Y., native, graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 1986 with a bachelor’s in mathematics. She went on to receive a master’s in business administration from Binghamton (N.Y.) University in 1988. A four-year member and one-time captain of the Bears swimming & diving team, Hook qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships seven times and garnered All-American honors in 1982-83 as part of the team’s 800-meter freestyle relay. She was also a member of the 1983-84 SUNYAC championship team. A seven-time SUNYAC champion (four relays, three individual events), Hook currently holds school records in the 1650 freestyle (18:35.59) and the 800 freestyle relay (8:01.86). Currently, Hook, 48, is an integrated supply chain executive for IBM. She and her husband, Douglas, reside in New Milford, Conn., with their sons Joshua (17), Avery (13), Zachary (10) and daughter Jena (14).

Jodie (Schoppmann) Robertson, a native of Levittown, N.Y., graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 2006 with a bachelor’s in music from the institution’s Crane School of Music. She earned her master’s in music education from Colorado State University in 2008. Robertson was an NCAA Woman of the Year semifinalist in 2006 and an NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipient following a standout four-year career with the Bears cross country team. After placing 23rd at the NCAA Division III Championships and earning All-America accolades in 2004, Robertson suffered a season-ending hip injury midway through the 2005 season after posting the fastest 4K, 5K and 6K times in NCAA Division III competition that year. A Maxcy Molnar Award recipient, Robertson earned numerous academic and athletic accolades throughout her career at Potsdam, including the Dr. Dolores Bogard SUNYAC Women’s Scholar-Athlete Award (2005) and the Julia E. Crane Memorial Award (2006), which is widely regarded as the Crane school’s highest honor. Robertson, 26, is currently an elementary band teacher at Searingtown Elementary School in New Hyde Park, N.Y. She will be taking a leave of absence for the 2011-12 school year to train for the U.S. Olympic Trials in January. Robertson and her husband, Aaron ’02, were married on July 3. The couple resides in Albany, N.Y.
