Syphurs blasts two home runs as Saints softball split

Caitlyn Syphurs was 3-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to a split on Wednesday morning in Clermont, Florida.

Syphurs hit a three-run blast to lead the Saints to a come-from-behind 9-8 win in eight innings against Thomas College in the first game of the day, then drove in both runs in a 3-2 loss to SUNY New Paltz in the second game with an RBI double and a solo home run.

The first game featured six home runs, thanks in part to a strong wind blowing out to center field. Lauren Farnia hit a solo blast to left center in the second, and Katlyn Coulter hit a two-run shot to almost the same spot in the fourth inning to give Thomas a 3-0 lead.

The Saints took their first lead of the game with a six-run fifth inning, with Mylea Mann and Syphurs both hitting three-run homers. Taylor Armijo hit a solo shot for her first career home run to lead off the seventh inning to push the lead to 7-3.

The Terriers came back to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Kayla Bess hit a three-run home run and Chiara Stone plated Katie Taylor with an RBI single.

In the eighth inning, Deanna Sullivan hit an RBI single to center field to score Carolyn Holran, who started the inning at second base with the international tiebreaker rule in place, and while the Terries loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame, Caroline Young induced a ground ball to short that Sullivan threw home to get the lead runner out, and the game ended when Elle Gray caught a pop fly on the infield.

Sullivan was 4-for-5 in the opener for the Saints, while Armijo was 2-for-3.

Young got the win in relief of Madison Mitchel for the Saints. Mitchell struck out a season-high 11 batters in six-plus innings and allowed six runs on just four hits. Young threw the final two innings, allowing two hits and one run. Sydney LeBourveau took the loss for the Terriers (2-3), allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.

St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game against New Paltz off Syphurs' RBI double, but the Hawks responded with three runs in the top of the second. Julia Dispigna plated two runs with a ground ball through the middle of the infield, and later scored on an infield single by Caroline Alicandri.

Syhpurs hit a long blast over the left field wall to lead off the seventh inning, but New Paltz pitcher Alyssa Pfitscher retired the next three St. Lawrence hitters in order to end the game.

Dispigna was 2-for-3 for the Hawks, while Alicandri was 2-for-4.

Young took the loss in a complete-game effort, allowing three unearned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Pfitscher threw a complete game for the Hawks (4-6), allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts on no walks.

St. Lawrence, now 5-3 on the season, will face Buffalo State and Juniata at Legends Way on Thursday.
