CAZENOVIA -- The SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer team remained undefeated with a 3-0 shutout at Cazenovia on Tuesday afternoon, breaking out for three second half goals. Sophomore forward Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) scored the game-winning goal and junior forward Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) added two insurance markers.

The Bears dominated from the outset, outshooting the Wildcats 18-2 in the first 45 minutes, but didn’t get on the board. “We had four great chances in the first five minutes, but couldn’t find the back of the net,” said Bears Head Coach Mark Misiak.

“We didn’t bring our shooting boots in the first half, but luckily Ashley scored very early in the second half.”

Thayer struck just 2:33 into the final period on an assist from freshman Kate Clauss (Bloomfield, N.Y./Bloomfield) and Potsdam’s momentum built.

Johnson’s first came at the 59:42 mark and she added her team-leading sixth goal in the 76th minute to put the game away. Senior midfielder Taylor Jordan (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) assisted on the goal.

Senior Dedra Palmer (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) made her first career start in goal for the Bears, making four saves for the shutout.

“Dedra Palmer was fantastic in goal,” said an impressed Misiak. “She was good from minute one through minute 90 today,” Cazenovia goalie Nalia Bouley finished with 14 stops for the Wildcats (0-3).

The Bears (3-0-1) are back in action Friday, Sept. 9, when the travel to Poultney, Vt. to take on the Green Mountain Eagles at 4 p.m.
