The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team allowed a season low in points by an opponent Friday, but was defeated 42-38 at Oswego in a State University of New York Athletic Conference contest at Oswego, N.Y.

Senior captain Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle, N.Y.) posted 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Bears (2-10 overall, 1-4 SUNYAC), who outrebounded the Lakers 47-38 but shot just 27.6 percent from the field, including 21.9 percent in the second half.

After the Bears took a 20-15 halftime lead, Oswego (6-6, 3-2) battled back early in the second half to tie the score at 25-25 with 11:49 remaining. The two teams exchanged a combination of baskets and turnovers before the Lakers took a 30-27 advantage, one they would not relinquish, at the 10:05 mark.

“We went through a little bit of a scoring drought and Oswego had a few players take over during that stretch,” Potsdam coach Tara Ruckh said. “We didn’t do a good job of containing them, they got ahead and then we couldn’t score until the end, when we had a little more urgency to get to the basket.”

A layup by sophomore Katy Briedis (Canton, N.Y.) brought the Bears to within two with seven seconds left, but Oswego’s Lauren Nunziato sealed the game with a pair of free throws with four seconds on the clock.

Potsdam led by as many as 11 in the first half, taking an 18-7 lead at the 8:28 mark after five straight points from Kellicutt.

“We did a good job rebounding, but we need to finish our good looks at the basket,” Ruckh said. “I was also pleased with our defensive effort … I thought we played with pressure and intensity. Now we just have to find a way to score.”

Oswego shot 35.7 percent in the second half after a 25-percent performance in the first.

Freshman Hannah Kmiecinski (Webster, N.Y.) finished with six points, five rebounds and four steals, while junior Sophie Parks (Bogart, Ga.) totaled 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Bears return to the floor tomorrow at Cortland. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
