SUNY Geneseo Knights pull away from Bears women's basketball in second half

GENESEO, N.Y.-- A strong second half lifted SUNY Geneseo (9-0, 3-0 SUNYAC) over the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-6, 0-3 SUNYAC) 82-43 on Friday evening. Freshman forward Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led the Bears with 12 points and also had five rebounds.

Potsdam came out with an 11-4 run over the first five minutes. Sophomore center Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) led the Bears with four points during the run, sophomore forward Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) hit a three, freshman guard Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) and Elliott contributed with a basket. The Knights answered back, ending the first on a 20-4 stretch. McKenna Brooks, Sara Ciotti and Lindsay Halpin each led with six points for Geneseo. Hansen and senior forward Victoria Shopovick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) were the only ones to score for Potsdam during the stretch, as they entered the second down 24-15.

The Bears clawed their way back and controlled most of the second with a 14-6 run. Elliott led Potsdam during the push with five points, Hunter had four, senior guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) and Shopovick had two points, and Walters had one. After Smith hit both of her free throws, the Bears were only down 29-30 with 2:11 until halftime. The Knights managed to shut them down for the rest of the half and entered halftime up 34-29.

Geneseo kept Potsdam quiet in the third outscoring them 26-8. The Knights scored each area, going 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and 8-for-10 from the charity line. Eight players scored for Geneseo with Kelsey Poplawski scoring nine points, all coming from three-pointers. Walters scored four, Elliott scored three and Hansen had one during the quarter for the Bears.

Potsdam could not change roles in the fourth as they got outscored 22-6 in the final quarter. Similar to the third Geneseo had several different scorers, with Kerrin Montgomery leading with five. During the fourth, Elliott and Shopovick had two points, and Hunter and junior guard Leah Giavotto (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) had one. The Knights went on to win the game 82-43.

Walters finished with nine points and led the Bears with nine rebounds. Hunter had seven points and had the team-high four steals and four assists. Shopovick and Hansen each had six points.

Brooks led Geneseo with 21 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Ciotti and Poplawski each hit three 3-pointers and ended with 12 points. Halpin was the last double digit scorer for the Knights with 11 points and had the team-high five assists.

Geneseo shot 45.6 percent from the field, while Potsdam shot 30.8 percent. The Knights also outrebounded the Bears 46-26.

Potsdam is back in action tomorrow at Brockport as they face the Golden Eagles at 2 p.m.
