(Canton, N.Y.)- SUNY Canton’s Joe Carbone received top coaching honors for the second straight year and five of his players were named to the all-Sunrise Conference baseball team.
Carbone led the Roos to a 6-5 conference mark and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, where they advanced to the championship game.
Sophomore catcher Tom Darling (Oswego, N.Y.), freshman second baseman Thomas Fearon (Ajax, Ontario), junior outfielder Michael Zelyez (Brasher Falls, N.Y.), sophomore outfielder Evan Hammond (Ottawa, Ontario), and junior pitcher Josh Soffer (Ottawa, Ontario) were selected to the all-conference team.
Darling batted .250 and was tied for the fifth in the conference with five doubles. He also scored 13 runs and had 19 total hits. Fearon also batted .250 and tied Darling with five doubles. He had 19 hits and 10 RBIs. Hammond was tied for seventh in the league in RBIs (15), tied for eighth in both hits (33) and doubles (6), and batted .277 with 16 runs scored. Zelyez batted .232 and was tied for second in triples with three. He also recorded 18 runs, 22 hits and 10 RBIs. Soffer was second in strikeouts with 53 and fourth in earned-run average (4.83). He had two wins this season including a nine-inning gem that beat Fisher College early in the season.
Four members of the team also received Gold Glove defensive awards including Zelyez, freshman catcher Phil Tsiaras (Toronto, Ontario), freshman third baseman Danny Perez (Brooklyn, N.Y.), junior shortstop Jeff Lake (Battersea, Ontario) and freshman outfielder Dillon James (Ottawa, Ontario).
