SUNY Canton women’s volleyball splits to open play at Oswego State Tournament

Oswego, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team swept Utica College after falling in four sets to the host Lakers on Friday at the Oswego State Tournament.

The Roos fell 3-1 (25-22, 12-25, 17-25, 19-25) to Oswego before earning a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-15) sweep v. the Pioneers in the nightcap.

SUNY Canton posted 12 kills to Oswego State's seven to earn a 25-22 opening set victory. The Roos committed more errors (9 and 8) than kills (8 and 5) as they struggled dropping the second and third sets, 25-12 and 25-17. The team bounced back with 11 kills in the fourth set but the Lakers hit .308 (13-5-26) to claim the four-set victory.

Melissa McMaster led all players with 13 kills hitting .318 (13-6-22), while Tatum LaFrance totaled 10 kills on 25 swings. Brynna Harris added a career-high five kills, while Jenna Roat tallied a match-best 17 digs. Peyton Robinson posted a double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs.

After squeaking out the first set 25-23, the Roos cruised past Utica in the second and third sets, 25-18 and 25-15. The team hit .202 in the match and had at least 12 kills in every set.

LaFrance led the way with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Peyton Robinson stuffed the stat sheet with 28 assists, six kills and six digs. Jenifer Morgan-Aubin recorded a match-high four service aces, while Marissa Ixtlahuac, Skye Hansen, McMaster and Harris posted five kills apiece. Sydney Uthe chipped in with 10 digs defensively.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Sunday at the Lakers Tournament when they take on Elmira College at 1 p.m. and D'Youville College at 3 p.m.
