(Potsdam, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s basketball team closed out their first semester with a 57-43 loss to Albany College of Pharmacy Sunday afternoon in Potsdam.

The Roos dropped to 1-7 overall and are off until Jan. 7 when they travel to Johnson State College.

SUNY Canton got off to a good start against the Panthers as Shannon Lafave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) converted a layup and Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.) nailed a 3-pointer giving the Roos a 5-0 lead two minutes into the contest. Another Kenyon jumper made it 7-2 a minute later but then Albany was able to work the ball inside and scored on four layups over a two-minute stretch to take a 9-8 lead.

The Panthers continued to pound the ball inside and stretched the lead to as much as 12 points before taking a 28-19 lead into intermission.

The lead swelled to 19 points (41-22) in the second half before the Roos battled back using a 16-5 run over an eight-minute stretch to pull within eight points. Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) and Mindy Small (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) combined for 12 points during that stretch with Maynard doing it on the inside and Small from the outside on a pair of 3-pointers.

But that’s as close as the Roos would get as the Panthers countered with 10 straight points to boost the lead back into double figures where it would stay the rest of the game.

Maynard had 14 points and eight rebounds, six on the offensive glass, to lead the Roos. Kenyon finished with seven points and six rebounds. LaFave added five points and five rebounds.

Katie McCormack posted a double-double to lead Albany with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Alyson Johnson added 12 points and five boards.
