SUNY Canton men’s lax advances to USCAA Championship Game with 19-14 win on Senior Day

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team outscored visiting SUNY Delhi 6-2 in the fourth quarter to earn a 19-14 victory in the opening round of the USCAA Tournament on Senior Day.

The Roos (6-6) will advance to the championship game of the four team tournament where it will face Alfred State College at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The Broncos (5-8) will face the University of Dallas in the consolation game at 9 a.m.

SUNY Canton jumped out to a 12-4 halftime lead behind two goals and three assists from Trenton Yule (Oswego, NY). Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) also scored once and added a pair of assists, while seniors Chris Gamble (Carthage, NY), Taylor Mustizer (Adams, NY) and Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) all found the back of the net.

The Broncos controlled play in the third quarter outscoring the Roos 8-1 to get within a single goal at 13-12, before SUNY Canton put the game away in the final 15 minutes. SUNY Canton controlled shots on goal 17-7 in the opening half, where Delhi held an 11-3 edge in the third quarter.

Gamble led the way offensively with five goals and one assist, while Smith was the high point man with eight on two goals and six assists. Skye Sunday (Akwesasne, NY) and Cam Carter (Colonie, NY) caged three goals apiece, while Yule finished with two goals and four assists.

Gruneisen had a monster game in the midfield picking up a game-high 12 ground balls, while Yule added seven. Smith and Hunter Yerdon (Canton, NY) finished with five pick-ups and three caused turnovers apiece.

Andrew Fiske (Winthrop, NY) made nine saves to improve to 3-1 on the season, while John Russo turned aside eight shots for the Broncos.

The Roos honored their seven graduating players of the Class of 2016 at halftime of today's contest: Andrew Fiske, Chris Gamble, Devin Gruneisen, Taylor Mustizer, Garrett DiTullio, Victor Rivera and Kyle Green.

The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Sunday at 12 p.m.
