Canton, NY – Jake Mayette found the back of the net twice and Sean Shepard scored his first collegiate goal, the game-winner, as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team earned a 4-2 win against No. 14 nationally-ranked Fredonia on Friday night in the Roos House.

THE BASICS

Result: SUNY Canton 4, Fredonia 2

Location: Roos House – Canton, NY

Records: SUNY Canton (4-5-1) | No. 14 Fredonia (8-2-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mayette led the Roos with two goals while Tyler Bullard tallied two assists.

The Roos opened the scoring just 3:40 into the contest when Sean David picked off a Fredonia break out pass off a faceoff win. He skated 2-on-1 with Jake Mayette into the zone as he deked Fredonia goalie Anton Rosen to beat him past the glove into an open net.

Fredonia evened the score at 11:54 on the power play when Luke Rivera put home a rebound out in front off a Tommy Martyn shot. Mike Freeman also earned a helper.

Canton regained the lead at 16:25 of the opening period when Zach Ahola worked to gain possession along the far boards finding Bailey Conklin behind the net. He fed the puck through the slot where Adam Petric deflected it to Kyler Matthews. He ripped a shot low through traffic past the glove of Rosen.

The Roos killed off over a minute of a 5-on-3 early in the second period to keep a 2-1 lead heading to first intermission.

The Blue Devils converted once again on the skater advantage with just less than three minutes left in the middle period. Jimmy Morgan blasted a shot past the blocker of Michael Cerasuolo from the slot after Ryan Dunner won the puck at the near boards.

Shepard tallied the eventual game-winner with five seconds left in the second period. Luke Hincenbergs played the puck to Bullard down low. He hit Shepard with a cross-ice pass as he ripped a one-timer from between the circles past the glove of Rosen.

Fredonia pulled the goalie with 1:17 to play and Bullard found Mayette who iced the game with an empty-netter with 56 seconds remaining.

The Blue Devils went 2-for-6 on the power play but the Roos outshot Fredonia 27-25

Cerasuolo 23 saves in his third win of the season, while Rosen turned aside 23 shots in the loss.
