BROCKPORT -- Junior Khalid Vaughn (New York, N.Y.) earned all-tournament honors at the SUNY Brockport Holiday Invitational posting his fourth double-double of the season in SUNY Canton’s 72-57 loss to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in the consolation game on Sunday.
Vaughn, who was also named to the all-tournament team at the season-opening Mount Saint Vincent tournament, tossed in 23 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Roos (2-8) against the Panthers.
Vaughn converted 9 of 14 free throw attempts and also had three steals in 39 minutes of action.
Junior Scott Dixon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) canned three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points and three rebounds, and senior Ryan Lamica (Constable, N.Y.) added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists for SUNY Canton.
The Panthers built a 44-27 halftime lead and then stretched that margin to 24 points at 56-32 with 12:54 remaining in the second half.
But the Roos kept fighting and reeled off a 22-8 run over the next seven minutes to close the gap to 10 points. Vaughn had seven points during that stretch on two layups and three free throws, Lamica had four points and Dixon added a three-point play, but that’s as close as the Roos would come as the Panthers held on for the victory.
Tyler Ferguson led Pittsburgh with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Jesse Deloof added eight points and two rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team.
SUNY Canton returns home next weekend for a pair of games starting with Vermont Technical College on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m. and the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m.
