POTSDAM -- The St. Lawrence University volleyball team went 4-0 at the Victory Promotions Tournament as it closed out the weekend defeating Oswego State 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17) and RIT 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 15-11).

"I am extremely proud of the aggressiveness and confidence that we showed this weekend, especially late in sets 4 and 5 (against RIT) after we failed to do that in set 3," Coach Roiger said. "I thought we played very smart and had a very balanced attack. And in the end it all paid off."

Leading the Saints in the first game of the day were the co-captains Abby Rose and Nyasha Miller. Against Oswego, Rose recorded a career-high 53 assists and chipped in 13 digs. Miller, who was named to the All-Tournament team, contributed 17 kills and 21 digs.

Junior Katherine Pierce paced the Saints defense with 32 digs, while senior Lauren Drozynski, Miller, and Rose recorded a combined 10 assisted blocks. Junior Liz Grogan sparked the offense with 14 kills. Drozynski and junior Marta Johann added nine and eight kills, respectively.

In the second and final match of the weekend, the Saints took on a tough RIT team. Unable to combat the hard hitting Tigers, the Saints dropped the first set, 17-25. The Saints regained their composure and came out firing in the second set, taking a quick 8-2 advantage. Behind some hard hitting by senior Lauren Drozynski, the Saints came out on top 25-20.

The Scarlet and Brown continued to battle the Tigers into the third set, but the Tigers were able to find holes in the Saints defense as they went on to win 21-25. In the fourth set, RIT was able to take advantage of some Saints miscues to gain a 14-20 advantage nearing the end of the match. A hard kill by senior Jordyn Buzza and big block by Rose fired the Saints up as they chipped away at the deficit to take the fourth set 25-23 and force a deciding game.

Johann and Miller led the Saints to victory in the fifth and final set as the team defeated the RIT Tigers 15-11 to take the 3-2 win. Johann contributed 12 kills, including some hard hitting down the final stretch, while Miller added 12 kills and 19 digs. Rose recorded 46 assists and 18 digs. Pierce also helped pace a phenomenal Saints defense with 18 digs.

The Saints will travel north to take on the Potsdam State Bears this Tuesday at Maxcy Hall. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.
