St. Lawrence University defense continues to dominate

Chyron Brown-Wallace led the St. Lawrence University football team, ranked No. 25 in the latest D3football.com poll, with 10 tackles, three for loss, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery as the Saints scored 21 fourth quarter points to post a 42-14 victory over Springfield College Saturday afternoon in a Liberty League game on Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium.

The St. Lawrence (5-0 overall, 2-0 Liberty League) defense scored twice on fumble recoveries including one by Tyler Mirabile to open the scoring early in the first quarter. Scott Arens added a 44-yard recovery and return for touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. The Saints have a defense that has scored more points (30 with five touchdowns) than they have allowed (28) for the season.

After the Mirabile recovery and touchdown, Cormac Garvey and Travis Marnell caught touchdown passes to put the Saints up 21-0.

Springfield (2-3, 1-1) cut the lead to 21-7 just before the half with a short run after an interception deep in the St. Lawrence zone.

In the third quarter, the Pride trimmed the lead to just one score with another short scoring run before the Saints scored three times in the final quarter with touchdown passes to Patrick Bryant and Matt Gardiner before Arens capped the scoring with his long return.

"It was great to see the team go out and compete for 60 minutes," said head coach Dan Puckhaber. "Everyone knew Springfield had been successful running the ball this year but our defense shut them down and held them to 100 yards rushing. Several players stepped up and made the big plays when they needed to."

The rushing attack for the Pride that entered the game averaging 261 yards per game struggled against the defensive front of the Saints. Brown-Wallace made several big stops and led the squad with 10 tackles including six solo stops. Fellow defensive tackle Ryan Byrne added nine tackles and a sack. Linebackers Alec Dietsch and Skyler Williamson combined for 15 tackles.

"Chyron (Brown-Wallace) certainly showed today that he is one of the best – if not the best – defensive lineman in the country," said Puckhaber. "With him, (Ryan) Byrne and Dylan Estridge, we have the best interior line in the East."

Rodrick Payne had another near miss for a 100-yard rushing day finishing with 97 yards on 20 carries while quarterback Sean Richardson finished with 73 yards on 12 rushes.

Richardson was 18-for-31 passing for 241 yards and four touchdowns and completed passes to seven different receivers. Gardiner led the receivers with five catches and 60 yards while Bryant and Payne had three catches each.

Kicker Andrew Carvalho was a perfect 6-for-6 on point after kicks and has now converted 46 consecutive kicks and is just three PATs from the school record of 111 set by Mitch Brown '78.

St. Lawrence produced 22 first downs and limited Springfield to just seven. The Saints racked up 411 yards of total offense and scored 28 points off Springfield turnovers.

The Saints return to action Saturday with a trip to Rochester to face the University of Rochester in a 1 p.m. game at Fauver Stadium.
