POTSDAM, N.Y.—Castleton University (2-2) scored in each half and kept the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-2-1) off the board for a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon. Bears junior goalie Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) finished with five saves on the day.
While the first half was fairly evenly played, the Spartans were able to capitalized midway through the period. At 24:26, sophomore forward Seraphin Iradukunda (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) set up sophomore midfielder Jacob Godfrey (Castleton, Vt./Rutland) for a 1-0 lead. Castleton sophomore goalie Alex Fernald (Phippsburg, Maine/Morse) stopped all three shots that came his way in the half to preserve the advantage.
The shots were even at seven apiece in the second half, but the Spartans made the most of their chances to extend their lead. At 76:35, Iradukunda struck with an assist from freshman defender Rida Kori (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) to make it 2-0. Unfortunately for the Bears, they weren't able to generate pressure to get back into the contest.
Fernald matched Mitchell's five saves for the shutout. Castleton outshot the Potsdam 17-14, but the Bears edged the Spartans in corners, 3-2.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday when they head to Geneva for a 4:30 p.m. showdown with Hobart College.
