Joseph Smith finished second and classmate Benjamin Fishbein was 10th to lead the 14th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's cross country team to third place at the Yellowjacket Invitational hosted by the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon.
Smith covered the eight-kilometer course in 25:43.4, finishing just five seconds behind Mount Union's Preston Myers, who led the Raiders to a team title. Fishbein finished in 26:26.1, while a trio of St. Lawrence runners closed out the Saints' scoring in a tight pack, with Sidi Abdoulaye (33rd, 27:10.5), Patrick Mortensen (34th, 27:10.8) and Logan Mancuso (38th, 27:15.2) finishing as the Saints three, four and five runners.
Mount Union, which had three runners in the top 10, won the team title with 62 points. Case Western was second with 98, while the Saints, running without senior Thomas Caulfield, were third in the 29-team invitational with 117 points.
St. Lawrence returns home to host the 25th Annual Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational next Saturday.
