Utica, NY – Scoring seven goals in the first half and allowing just one gave the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team a sizeable lead at the break, and the Golden Knights cruised to a 12-8 non-league win over Utica College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-1 on the season and will begin conference play next weekend at Rensselaer. Utica dropped to 1-2.

Though Clarkson and Utica were essentially even in shots (25-18) in the first half, the Golden Knights' attempts found their mark with a much higher frequency. Of Clarkson's 25 shots, 18 were between the pipes, but Utica had only six of its attempts make it on goal.

The shots on goal differential proved important, as Clarkson was able to score four times in the first 13 minutes and Utica was held without a goal until the 11:31 mark. The Knights also closed the first half with three goals in the final 10 minutes to take a 7-1 lead into the locker room.

Near the midway point of the second half, Clarkson led by a score of 10-2, but Utica slowly chipped away at the deficit. The Pioneers scored five of the final six goals in the contest in the last 12 minutes of play, but by that point the Knights were just running out the clock.

Sophomore Lexi Smith led Clarkson with a career-high six points, scoring twice and finding her teammates for four assists. Jaid Baytos added four points on two goals and two assists, while also adding in five groundballs and three draw controls. Marisa Clark chipped in three points with a goal and two assists while both Abby Collins and Emma Andrews each scored two goals. Abby Gruneisen led the team with four caused turnovers and Samantha Gladd made 10 saves.

For Utica, Natalie Capriglione scored six times after scoring just once in the first two games of the season for the Pioneers. Hailee Dumont added a goal, an assist, and four draw controls, and Stephanie Husney contributed two assists. Hali Vandermeulen recorded 19 saves and five groundballs for the Pioneers.

Clarkson led in shots (46-33), shots on goal (31-18), and groundballs (27-20).
