Junior Stephanie Sayward scored her sixth goal of the season with under four minutes to play in the second overtime period to lift St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory in its Liberty League opener at Skidmore College on Saturday.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak against Skidmore and improves the Saints to 4-2-1 overall on the year and 1-0-0 in league play. Skidmore is now 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League.
Goaltender Abby van Geldern and the Saint defense also came through with a strong performance in the win as vanGeldern made seven saves for her third consecutive shutout and the Saints were solid in front of her as Skidmore had an 18-6 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks, but couldn't get on the scoreboard.
"The effort today was tremendous from the beginning of the game to the end," said Saint coach Franco Bari. "We came out a little bit slow, but really picked up the momentum and created some quality opportunities and capitalized on the most important one of them all. It was a fantastic collective team effort."
Sayward's game winner, her first of the year, came as she collected a loose ball that got behind Skidmore goalie Meghan Sleezer and a Thoroughbred defender and then calmly scored from about 12 yards out at the 1:06.10 mark. The goal ended a Skidmore five game win streak and five-game shutout streak.
The Saints will continue league play when they host Bard and Vassar Friday and Saturday at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
