The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team concluded its 2010 fall season ranked No. 15 in the Northeast as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Thursday.
The Saints were led by sophomore Philip Jackley, who compiled a 6-1 record in singles play. He advanced to the final round of "A" singles at St. Lawrence's annual Fall Classic, where he split sets with #10 ranked Josh Rifkin of Ithaca before spraining his ankle at 4-3 in the super tie-breaker and being forced to retire. He did not compete in the ITA Championships due to the injury.
Sophomore Michael Hayden went 5-2 in the fall in singles action. At the ITA Championships, he defeated Andres Rivera (Manhattanville) 6-2, 6-0 and then split sets with seeded Dan Freeman of Vassar before falling in the tie-breaker set, 6-4, 4-6, (10-7).
Senior Will Cook recorded a 4-3 record, posting two victories in third set super tie-breaker at the Fall Classic to highlight his fall season. He defeated Alex Magill (UR) 3-6, 6-4, 14-12 after facing a match point and then went on to defeat Coby Berman (Hamilton) 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 to advance to the third round of "B" singles where he fell to the eventual champion Mike Moreno of Hamilton.
The tennis teams will be back in action in March, when they travel to Orlando, FL over spring break to compete in a series of matches before starting their Northeast schedules at Ithaca College on the 26th.
