SLU Women’s Soccer surrenders late goal and settles for tie

For the second time in as many days, the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team walked away from the pitch with a 1-1 tie but Saturday's tie at SUNY Oswego may have been tougher to take as the Saints surrendered a goal in the final seconds of regulation to force the overtime periods.

St. Lawrence (4-0-2) scored early in the second period to take a 1-0 lead after the two teams played a scoreless first half. Lindsay Geier scored for the Saints with an assist from Hannah Merriam who sent a nice crossing pass in the box to Geier who volleyed the ball into the back of the net.

"We faced a very physical, aggressive team today," said head coach Franco Bari. "While we came out a bit flat after yesterday's overtime, we were able to apply more pressure in the second half and scored a very well deserved goal. While it's a 90 minute game, unfortunately we didn't have an answer for their pressure in the final minutes. The team did a great job of fighting back and creating opportunities in the two overtime periods."

For the final couple minutes of the second half, Oswego (3-1-2) applied pressure with three shots and two corner kicks before finally scoring the equalizer with just seven seconds remaining on the game clock.

The Saints responded with aggressive play to start the overtime sessions outshooting the Lakers 3-1 in the first overtime period. St. Lawrence had the only shot on goal in the extra sessions.

Jackie Sovie and Samantha Allen split time in goal for the Saints, combining for six saves.

The Saints return home for a 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon matchup against SUNY Plattsburgh on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
