The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team defeated Oswego State, 63-55, in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday night in Oswego, NY.
The Saints improve to 9-1 while the Lakers fall to 5-4 on the season.
"This was a really gutsy win," said St. Lawrence Head Coach Dan Roiger. "We were short-handed because of injuries, in foul trouble, and we ran out of gas in the second half. However, in the final minute we found a way to make a few plays and then cashed in on free throws. I'm really proud of what we overcame tonight. It was a great team win."
First-year student Kelly Legg paced the Saints with 15 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and a steal, while junior Casey Capello added 13 points, four rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Juniors Iris Santoni and Katie Edgerton recorded 10 and nine points, respectively, while first-year student Katie Abramski added eight points with a team-high eight rebounds.
Both teams exchanged points for the majority of the first half until St. Lawrence went on a run in the last 7:00 minutes to build a 37-28 cushion heading into the locker rooms. Capello and Legg each tallied nine points apiece in the first half for the Saints.
Around the 18:00 minute mark, Capello drained one of her three 3-pointers to give the Saints their largest advantage of the game at 41-28. The Lakers, however, chipped away at the deficit with the help of several St. Lawrence turnovers to bring the score to 54-50 with under 4:00 minutes to play. Oswego then went on a 5-1 run to tie the score up at 55-55 at the 1:15 minute mark.
A quick basket by first-year student Abramski after a Saint timeout put St. Lawrence up 57-55. After Legg gathered in the rebound from a missed Oswego jumper at the :40 second mark, Santoni, Capello and Legg each made a pair of free throws in the waning seconds of the game, allowing the Saints to come away with the 63-55 victory and their ninth win of the season.
The Saints will open up conference play on January 14th when they travel to RPI. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
