Junior back J.J. Tipton scored his first career game-winning goal on a corner kick just over 15 minutes into the second half and St. Lawrence University's top-ranked men's soccer team won its tenth straight game with a 1-0 Liberty League win at Vassar Saturday afternoon.

The Saints recorded their sixth straight shutout, although Saint goalie Brian Abernethy did not have to make a save. SLU outshot Vassar, 7-3-1, 2-1, 14-7 and had five corner kicks to two for the Brewers. Vassar goalie Ryan Grimme made five saves as the Saints had six shots on goal to none for Vassar.

"Vassar had the ball against us more than anyone has all year," said Saint coach Bob Durocher. "They've got a good team and made a couple of nice combinations inside to get chances, but put it wide. I thought we played well defensively, but it is important for us to keep the ball and in the past when we have lost it we have gotten it right back. Today we had a hard time getting it back to Vassar's credit."

The game-winning goal came as Tipton, who was inserted in a corner kick role a week ago, curled the ball into the net with Brian Gilloran screening the goalie.

"We have tried a few different people on corner kicks, and JJ has had a good service. When the other team has a shorter goalie we usually have Alex Laird of Gilloran up there to clog things up and it can cause some problems for the defense," said Durocher. "We played a couple like that today, and while a couple were punched out, Gill was able to screen him as he tried to get in front just at JJ kicked the ball, and JJ ended up with a neat goal for the win as he curved it into the net."
