CANTON -- The St. Lawrence women's soccer team scored four first-half goals en route to a 5-1 win over Oswego State on Wednesday afternoon, as consistent offensive pressure combined with an impenetrable defensive unit were the keys to the Saints success.

"The past few days we work on defending as a unit and appeared to click fairly well," Head Coach Franco Bari said. "Nyssa LaClair really sparked our offense with a hard-working goal and from there our forward momentum really took off."

LaClair was the first of five different Saints to score on the afternoon, as she got the home team on the board when she capitalized on a defensive miscue by Lakers goalkeeper Melissa Siegfried. Siegfried tried to settle a back pass from one of her defenders to her feet, but it caromed off her shin on onto the foot of LaClair who was crashing the net.

The senior captain touched the ball around the keeper and into the net for an easy finish.

Ten minutes later, the Lakers pulled even at 1-1 after Bri Dolan successfully converted a penalty kick attempt. The kick was awarded after a collision at the top of the box wen Saints keeper Kelsey West challenged the Lakers leading scorer Tia Segretto for a 50-50 ball.

For the remainder of the game, the Saints did a stellar job containing Segretto and her offensive firepower up front, doubling the senior striker every time she handled the ball.

The Lakers were unable to contain the Saints though, as sophomore Taylor Golsborough put the Saints in front for good in the 20th minute. After a long throw into the box, Goldsborough battled for possession in the middle of three Oswego defenders, turned and fired a quick, high shot from 15 yards out that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced behind the goal line.

Initially play continued but a quick conversation amongst the officials made it 2-1 in favor of the Saints.

The goal is Goldsborough's second game-winning score in as many games.

In the 26th minute, Emily Depoy took a pass from senior captain Laura Topf and buried a left-footed shot from 10 yards out inside far right post to give the Saints a 3-1 lead.

First-year Laura Moore pushed the lead to 4-1 with her first collegiate goal in the 31st minute. Moore and the Saints were able to capitalize on their third corner kick in a matter of minutes, as Caroline Crandall played a beautiful ball out of the reach of Siegfried and across the goal mouth to Moore who was waiting to head the ball down on the far post.

The fifth Saints goal came in the 69th minute from fellow first-year student Kaleigh White. After possessing the ball for quite some time in the middle third of the field, junior Mimi Coppinger played a ball forward to Katie Stames who then turned and hit a quick cross to White, who was streaking towards goal on the opposite side of the field. Using her speed, White cut by an Oswego defender and beat Siegfried with a shot along the ground that trickled inside the far post.

Siegfried finished with three saves for the Lakers, while West registered six saves for the Saints. Jackie Sovie also saw her first action in goal this season, finishing out the game late in the second half.

The Saints are back on the road this weekend, traveling to SUNY Geneseo for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday afternoon.
