POTSDAM -- Sophomore midfielder Sam DeMello scored the game's only goal in a scramble after a penalty kick 14:18 into the second half and St. Lawrence University recorded a 1-0 win over Houghton College at Clarkson on Saturday.

The win was the fourth straight Lotto Tournament Championship for SLU and the Saints’ seventh in the eight-year history of the event.

DeMello's game winner followed a sequence of blocked shots in the box. He originated the play with the corner kick and then picked up a rebound for his first goal of the season at 59:18.

The Saint defense shut down Houghton the rest of the way, allowing only two second half shot attempts and a total of six in the game. Saint goalie Brian Abernethy needed just one save for his second shutout of the season while Houghton's Steve Zacchigna made three saves in the loss.

"We executed very well on the winning corner kick," said Saint coach Bob Durocher. "We didn't possess the ball as well as we did in Friday's opener, but that might have been because we had a very short turnaround time after playing the late game Friday and again at noon on Saturday.

"Our defense was solid, they shifted well together and blocked potential dangerous shots. If we can keep possession and keep shots against as us low as these first two games, it gives us the opportunity to be successful."

DeMello was one of four Saints named to the all tournament team. Sean Scott and Alex Laird, who scored goals in Friday's 2-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan, joined DeMello, who had a goal and an assist in the tournament and junior forward Brendan Gorman as the Saint representatives on the all-star squad.

The Saints will continue a series of early season challenges with road games at Rochester and Geneseo on Friday and Saturday.
