Clinton, NY - Freshman guard Madison Shea (Clifton Park, NY) denied Hamilton College of two chances to tie the game with a pair of steals in the final 10 seconds to help lead the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 70-66 victory over the Continentals on Saturday afternoon.

Winners of five straight, the Golden Knights closed out the non-league portion of the season with a record of 7-2, their best showing in non-conference action since the 2002-03 season. Hamilton saw its winning streak come to an end, falling to 7-4.

Clarkson led throughout the first half, starting quickly on a 3-pointer from Cara Manfredi (Glastonbury, CT) just nine seconds into the game. The Knights raced out to a 9-1 lead in just 76 seconds and pushed their advantage to as many as nine points in the opening six minutes. Though Hamilton tied the game at 17-17, Manfredi keyed a second rally by the Knights with two more 3-pointers, sparking and ending a 12-3 run (29-20). With a solid run down the stretch of the first half, however, Hamilton climbed back to within one at intermission.

The second half continued as a back and forth affair as the lead changed six times and the game was tied on three more occasions. Clarkson led by as many as five (46-41) at 17:31, and Hamilton enjoyed a three-point lead with 4:59 to go. A Stephanie Grobe jumper at 3:38 gave Clarkson the lead, and despite a tie at 65-65, the Knights never trailed again. Up 67-66 with less than a minute to go, Clarkson's Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) made a steal off a deflection from the interior, but pulled up short on the ensuing possession to run out some of the clock. After a handful of fouls by Hamilton to push the Knights into the bonus, Loggins hit the front end of a one-and-one to give Clarkson a 68-66 lead with 19.5 seconds to go. Following a miss, Hamilton raced up the court to try and get an easy look inside, but Shea anticipated the long pass and made a steal with nine seconds to go. The freshman hit a pair of free throws to give Clarkson a 70-66 lead, and a few seconds later Shea made yet another steal and dribbled out the clock to end the contest.

Stephanie Grobe (White River Junction, VT) finished with a team-best 16 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field, to go along with five rebounds, while Manfredi added in 15 points. Loggins had another double-double with 12 points and 12 boards, and first-year classmates Shea and Devin Sorell (Hannibal, NY) each surpassed double figures as well. For Hamilton, Sam Graber scored 23 points and grabbed 10 boards and Lauren Getman also produced a double-double with 10 poitns and 11 rebounds. Sam Srinivasan chipped in 20 points and eight boards.
