Geneva, NY – Freshman Brianna Thibeau (Salem, NY) did her best in goal for the Clarkson University Women’s Soccer team, denying 12 shots from second-ranked William Smith, but the Herons converted twice to claim a 2-0 Liberty League victory Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights dropped to 5-1-0 and 0-1-0 in the Liberty League, giving up their first goals of the season. William Smith remained unbeaten at 7-0-1 and 1-0-0.
The Herons took little time getting on the scoreboard against the Knights, as Dineo Mmulta tallied her second goal of the season with an assist from Whitney Frary at the 10:58 mark. Despite several more chances, Clarkson’s defense held, allowing just six shots and no corner kicks in the first half.
William Smith continued to put pressure on the Knights, but Thibeau was up to task, stopping nine of the Herons’ 11 shots and watching the other two go harmlessly by the Clarkson frame. It appeared as if the Knights would just need a solid chance in the final minutes to force overtime, but a foul committed in the penalty area gave the Herons a penalty kick, which Whitney Frary converted for her sixth goal of the season with just over five minutes remaining in the contest.
The Herons finished with an 18-2 edge in shots in the contest, but were limited to only two corner kick chances, while Clarkson had no corner opportunities. Thibeau finished with 12 saves, while Amanda Davis needed to make just one stop for William Smith.
