POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team held a lead early in the second half Friday night but couldn’t hang on in a 58-48 setback against Oneonta State in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at Welsh Gymnasium.
After taking a 30-29 lead just over two minutes into the second half on a lay-up by junior Kaley Arsenault (Syracuse, N.Y.), the Bears (1-5 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC) hit a dry spell from the floor as Oneonta made an 11-0 run to take a 40-30 advantage with 14:06 remaining in the contest.
The Red Dragons (3-0, 1-0) outscored the Bears 24-12 in the paint and took advantage of 13 second-half turnovers by Potsdam. The Bears shot 28 percent in the second period after shooting 42 percent in the opening frame.
“We’re making progress, but we need to cut down on our turnovers,” Potsdam coach Tara Ruckh said. “We didn’t shoot it well in the second half either. I’m pleased how with how we responded after a poor performance Tuesday … I’m optimistic, but we had a chance to win the game.”
Freshman forward Jessica Kouzan (Webster, N.Y.) registered her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle, N.Y.) led all scorers with 15 points to go along with three assists. Sophomore Katy Briedis (Canton, N.Y.) added five points and three steals.
Both teams were perfect from the free throw line in the contest, with Oneonta going 12-for-12 and Potsdam converting all four of its attempts.
The Bears resume SUNYAC play tomorrow against New Paltz. Tip-off at Welsh Gymnasium is slated for 2 p.m.
