The St. Lawrence University women's rowing team concluded the 2017-18 season at the 2018 National Invitational Rowing Championship (NIRC) in Worcester, Massachusetts on Friday afternoon.
The Saints raced three boats on the day, competing in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight events. The second varsity eight had the best final finish in third, while the varsity crew was fourth and the novice finished sixth.
For the varsity eight, the Saints bested Rochester by three seconds and Mount Holyoke by 13 seconds to finish fourth with a time of 6:57:319 in the third level final in the afternoon. Colby won the race in 6:49.802, while Simmons and Trinity finished just .4 seconds apart in a photo finish for second and third, respectively.
The Saints were sixth in the third heat during the morning session beating seventh-place Skidmore by 36 seconds with a time of 6:56.572. St. Lawrence finished just behind Simmons' boat, which posted a time of 6:53.200.
The second varsity eight started the day with a seventh-place finish in the third level heat of their event Friday morning, posting a time of 7:27.041. In the final in the afternoon, the Saints finished the course in 7:43.141 to finish third and edged Rochester's 2V crew, in fourth, by 1.7 seconds. New Hampshire topped the final in 7:34.337.
The novice eight did not race in heats in the morning, as all six entries were put into a grand final during the afternoon session. The Saints raced against novice crews from Bates, Ithaca, Wellesley, Tufts and the University of Rhode Island. St. Lawrence posted a time of 7:35.361 to finish sixth. The top three boats, Bates, Ithaca and Tufts, were just three seconds apart as Bates won the event in 7:03.232 and Ithaca and Tufts clocked in at 7:06.152 and 7:06.608, respectively.
