Maggie McLaughlin scored a goal and added an assist, and four other players scored goals to lead the No. 9/10 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 5-0 win over Rensselaer in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

Rachael Smith, Dakota Golde, Steph Keryluk and Nadine Edney also scored for St. Lawrence, which improved to 5-5-1 overall, 1-0-0 in ECAC Hockey. Rensselaer fell to 2-4-2, 0-1-0.

"It was important for us to get up early on RPI tonight," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "(RPI goaltender Lovisa) Selander has been excellent against us on many occasions. To be able to get two in the first was nice. They work hard all the time and make it tough to get to the net.

"It was good to get a lot of people on the score sheet tonight as well. Our team has worked hard all year and to get some success always keeps the train moving."

Smith gave the Saints a 1-0 lead with seven and a half minutes to play in the first period, tipping a shot from the point by Kristen Guerriero past Selander. The goal was the third of the season for Smith and Guerriero's assist was her first collegiate point.

Golde scored the Saints' second goal five minutes later, redirecting a centering pass from Jessica Poirier into the net for her first goal of the season.

St. Lawrence pulled away with three goals in the second period. Keryluk blast a slap shot to the top right corner for her second of the year, Edney scored her second of the season on a double-tipped shot from the point by Jacquie Diffley that was originally redirected by Justine Reyes, and Maggie McLaughlin shovelled in a rebound for her second goal of the year. Poirier and Diffley both registered two assists for the Saints.

Grace Harrison got the win, making six saves in the first 34:15 before being releived by Jaimie Rainville, who stopped 10 shots in her first collegiate action. Selander made 26 saves in the first two periods; Kira Bombay made 16 saves and didn't allow a goal in the third period for the Engineers.

The Saints dominated nearly every aspect of the game, holding a 47-16 advantage in shots on goal, including a 31-7 edge in the first two periods. St. Lawrence was also 32-15 in the faceoff circle.

St. Lawrence will face Union at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be available on ESPN+ for viewers in the U.S. and through Stretch Internet for international viewers.
