Saints women's cross country near perfect to continue Liberty League streak

It was an almost perfect day for St. Lawrence University's women's cross country team at the 2014 Liberty League Championships at Saratoga State Park on Saturday as the Saints rolled to their 13th straight team title.

Led by senior Cassia Hameline who won her fourth race in six starts this season, the Saints scored a near-perfect 16 points, taking the top four places in the race with their fifth and final scorer finishing in sixth place. RIT was a distant second in the eight-team field with 56 points followed by Vassar and RPI with 79 each, Vassar earning third based on top five head-to-head. The 16 point score was a Liberty League Championship record.

"I couldn't be prouder of the way the entire team raced today," said coach Mike Howard. "Cassie and Lisa continued to set the pace from the gun and we never looked back. The :49 second spread that we had from one-to-five was our best of the season and I continue to believe that we have our best races ahead of us".

Hameline ran her third straight sub-22 minute time on a 6,000 meter course Saturday, winning in 21:38.1 to lead a field of 110 runners. Sophomore Lisa Grohn was second in 21:49.3, senior Anne Martino fourth in 22:02.9 and first year Megan Kellogg was fourth in 22:08.9.

RIT's Emma Jones broke up the parade of Saints across the finish line with a fifth place finish, but Ashley Leta completed the Saint scoring in sixth in 22:27.4 with Carrie Pomainville finishing 17th in 23:21.4 and Anne Rabideau 19th in 23:24.6 to complete the Saint top seven.

Other Saint finishers in Saturday's race included Melanie Swick in 31st, Sophia Dastli in 50th, Hannah Fake in 53rd with Madeline Funk 54th, Courtney Mullen 58th, Claire Pacione 65th and India Harvey 73rd.

The Saints have a week off before competing in the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
