Saints Whelan, Dennis advance in Liberty League tourney

Senior Jack Whelan shot the second best round in Saint golf program history and qualified as an individual for the 2015 Liberty League Spring Championships, but the Saint team came up one spot short in the fall qualifier at Ravenswood Golf Course in Rochester.

In a new format adopted this season after a previous match-play championship in the spring, the top four teams from the weekend tournament and the top four individuals not on qualifying teams will advance to a 36-hole stroke play championship tournament which will be hosted in the spring by Rochester as the winner of the fall qualifier.

The winning team from the spring qualifier will earn the Liberty League's automatic team qualification. There is no automatic qualification for individuals.

Rochester had a big Sunday round, shooting a team eight-under 280 for a 575 total on familiar territory as the host team. RPI finished second at 587 with Skidmore third at 605 and NYU fifth at 609. The Saints were fifth, ten strokes out of the top four at 619 after a team score of 303 on Sunday while Clarkson was sixth and Hobart seventh.

Whelan was one of two individual qualifiers for the Saints as Parker Dennis shot rounds of 75 and 79 for a 154 total and was tied for 19th overall, but advanced along with Tyler Cline (t-11th) and Scott Henning of Clarkson, who took the fourth individual spot in a playoff. Whelan shot a four-over par 76 in the opening round, but came back with his best round and the best round of the tournament with his 67 on Sunday for a 143 total, tied for second overall. He now has the top three rounds in SLU history with a 66 as the team record, a 67 and has shot 68 more than once.

Jake Danforth shot rounds of 80 and 79 for a 159 total, 28th overall, Jack Reardon shot 85-78 for a 163 total (t-34th) and Brady Garrett shot 87-79 for a 166 total (37th). Sam Cregg, playing as an individual, shot rounds of 80 and 81 for a 161 final score and tied for 34th overall.
