The St. Lawrence University volleyball team upset the defending champions and top seed Clarkson University in Friday's opening match of the Liberty League Tournament in the Burkman Gymnasium in Canton, NY.

The Saints, 1-0 in Liberty League Tournament play and now 23-10 this season, will look to remain unbeaten against Vassar in the second match this evening. Clarkson (24-9) will have the middle session off before returning to action at 8:00pm against Union.

In the first set, the Saints and the Golden knights battled point for point until Clarkson was able to pull away behind the spot on hitting of Megan Mahon and the strong defense by Simons and Edwards.

The two teams continued to battle into the second set, neither able to take a substantial lead until the Saints went on a 10-2 run to take the set as senior Lauren Drozynski and junior Marta Johann provided great efforts offensively and defensively.

Both teams had some sloppy play in the third set, but it was the Scarlet and Brown who were able to take advantage of the Golden Knights mental errors and incorporate the effective play of the front line led by Drozynski. The Saints ended the set on a10-4 run to steal the third on a kill by junior Liz Grogan.

The Saints were able to take a 18-13 lead behind more Golden Knight errors and Nyasha Miller's phenomenal play on the front line as she continued to find holes in Clarkson's defense. A big dig by Durio helped the Golden Knights gain some momentum as they closed the gap, 23-20. St. Lawrence was able to close out the fourth set and pull off the upset behind a kill by Miller and a Clarkson error.

Leading the Saints offense was Miller with 15 kills and 18 digs, while Grogan added 13 kills. Abby Rose recorded 40 assists and five service aces while senior Jordyn Buzza added seven kills and 15 digs.
