The St. Lawrence University volleyball team opened the 2010 Cardinal Classic with a pair of victories Friday as it swept both SUNY-Old Westbury and Baruch College in the first day of the Cardinal Classic.

"Today was a very good day for our program," said Coach Shelly Roiger.  "We were able to play our whole team in the first match and demonstrate our depth against Old Westbury."

In the first match of the day, the Saints cruised to victory over the Panthers by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-13 behind 11 kills and three service aces by senior Jordyn Buzza.  Junior Nyasha Miller added 9 kills and 2 blocks, while senior Abigail Rose added 13 digs and recorded 25 assists.

The Saints then topped the Baruch College Bearcats by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-20, to complete the sweep and the 3-0 match victory.  Leading the Scarlet and Brown to the win was Miller with 15 kills, 14 digs, and three aces.  Juniors Liz Grogan and Marta Johann, along with teammate Buzza, combined for 22 kills while Rose added 35 assists for the Saints offense.  Buzza led the Saints defensive effort with 16 digs.  Junior Katherine Pierce and senior Lauren Drozynski added 13 digs and three assisted blocks, respectively.

"Our match against Baruch College was a great quality win," Roiger added.  "We ran a very efficient offense and came up with some great defensive stops against a high-quality middle attack.  I'm very proud of the Saints for their performance today."

The Saints, who won their eighth consecutive match, will look to extend their current win streak with a victory over Buffalo State.  The match is scheduled to begin at 10am on Saturday, September 18th - the second day of the Cardinal Classic.  The Saints will play again at either 2pm or 4pm for a place finish in the tournament.
