St. Lawrence University's men's cross country team did the expected on Saturday, winning its 20th consecutive Liberty League team championship at Saratoga State Park, and, like several previous outings this season, it was someone different at the head of the pack.
Sophomore Thomas Caulfield led the Saints with a third place finish overall and SLU finished with 29 points as a team with RPI second with 40 and RIT third with 69 in the eight-team field.
All five Saint scorers were in the top eight in Saturday's race and the title was sealed when Saint runners finished in a group from fifth through eighth with a span of nine seconds separating fifth place Wesley Kirui and eighth place Trevor Bibb.
Caulfield ran 25:30.1 on the eight kilometer course for his third place finish. RIT's Matt Giannino led the 114-runner field in 25:16.4 for his second straight individual title.
Kirui ran 25:39.7 for his fifth place finish with Joe Smith sixth in 25:43.2, Spencer Patterson seventh in 25:46.9 and Bibb eighth in 25:48.2. Harrison Sloan was the sixth Saint finisher, 11th overall in 26:12.1 and Scott Smolensky completed SLU's top seven with a 13th place finish in 26:14.5.
Ben Fishbein was 14th in 26:15.2, Dennis Korir 20th in 26:34.1, Evan Page 22nd in 26:41.6 and was the top freshman finisher in the field. Andrew Jarombek finished 28th, Adam Bankert was 41st, Aaron Tompkins 48th, Jason Hardacre 62nd, Caleb Kessler 64th and Zane Belden 75th for the Saints.
