Saints men's basketball close 2017-18 season with loss to Skidmore

Dom DeRegis, Pierre Coffy and Brandon Arnold all netted double-digits, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team couldn't stop a high-scoring Skidmore offense at the Thoroughbreds went on to defeat the Saints 88-62 to close of the 2017-18 regular season in Burkman Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

DeRegis led the Saints with 16 points and six rebounds, while Coffy and Arnold tallied 12 and 10, respectively. The two combined for eight rebounds for the Scarlet and Brown. David Gagas posted a team-high four steals and added eight points.

DeRegis kicked off scoring for the Saints, but the Thoroughbreds quickly built a 10-4 lead after Edvinas Rupkus went 2-for-2 from the line.

A 6-0 run for the Saints brought them within two points of Skidmore midway through the first half, but over the next two minutes Skidmore gained a nine-point advantage, capped by Noah Meren with 7:44 to play.

Rupkus gave the Thoroughbreds their first double-digit lead with four minutes until the break. Jack Byrne extended Skidmore's lead to 17 just before halftime.

The second half seemed to be plagued with fouls, as the second half alone had a combined 22 fouls between both teams. St. Lawrence went 12-for-15 from the line in the second, while Skidmore shot 9-for-13.

Dakpe Yilijep made a layup with about 11 and a half minutes to play and successful completed the 3-point play to give Skidmore a 22-point lead. Jack Byrne nailed three 3-pointers in a just over a minute, as the high scoring Skidmore offense continued to build their lead down the stretch.

Skidmore was led by Yilijep with 26 points and seven rebounds, while Rupkus added 21 points and six rebounds. Jack Byrne rounded out the top-three scorers for the Thoroughbreds with 14 points. Rupkus also posted a team-high seven assists. Skidmore combined to shoot 51.7 percent from the field and 40 percent from the arc.

The Saints finished the season 5-20 overall and 3-15 in conference play, while Skidmore kept their playoff hopes alive finishing 13-11 and 9-9.
