Saints Hall of Fame to induct 7 individuals, '02 women's basketball team

The 2002 NCAA Division III runner-up St. Lawrence University women's basketball team will be joined by seven outstanding individual athletes when the St. Lawrence University Athletic Hall of Fame inducts its class of 2014 on Oct. 25.

Two-sport All Americas Herb Bleck and Tim Smith will join national champions Kirk Dixon and Scott Frame, basketball All America Blaine Harris, lacrosse All America Vicki Pierce and Academic All America tennis player Leah Walbourn Warner as the individual nominees along with members of the 2001-02 women's basketball team which went 28-4 and lost in the national championship game by just two points.

The induction ceremony will take place Saturday, Oct. 25 at noon in the Eben Holden Center and is open to the public. Tickets are $25 per person and must be reserved in advance. Please call 315-229-5418 to make reservations.

The St. Lawrence Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1979 and will induct its 36th class this month. With the new inductees it will include 228 athletes, 12 coaches/administrators and 21 teams.

The women's basketball team won its league regular season and tournament titles and included three 1,000 point scorers in an outstanding senior class. It set a number of season records in 2001-02 and the members of the senior class went 98-21 in their four years, making four straight NCAA appearances.

Bleck '79 was an All America in both football and baseball, quarterbacking the 1978 football team to the NCAA tournament and leading the 1978 and 1979 baseball teams both at the plate and on the mound. He hit .443 in his final season of baseball and had a 1.02 earned run average in nine games as a pitcher.

Smith '88 was All America in both football and lacrosse, was selected to the North-South Lacrosse All Star game and was the 1988 Outstanding Male Athlete Award winner. He was the leading tackler as both a junior and senior on the football team and was team MVP as a senior. A long stick defenseman in lacrosse, he was twice named All America in that sport, earning first team honors as a senior.

Dixon '86 was a three-time All America in track and the 1984 NCAA Division III outdoor 400 meter champion. A record-setter in both the 400 and relays, he was a many-time state and league champion in his indoor and outdoor track career and also played on the Saint football team.

Frame '77 was a 16-time All America during his St. Lawrence swimming career, and played a major role in the 1976 NCAA team championship as an individual champion in the 200 freestyle and a member of the winning 800 free and 400 medley relay teams. The winner of the Douglas McDevitt Award as the outstanding swimmer in New York State as a senior, he set SLU records in every event in which he competed.

Harris '85 is fourth player in Saint basketball history to earn All America honors and the second in the modern era, and ranks second on the all-time St. Lawrence basketball scoring list at the time of induction. He scored 1,457 career points, averaging nearly 15 per game for his. He averaged 17.1 points per game and 11.5 rebounds as a senior, earning all-league, All East and All America honors. He was a second-team Regional All America as a junior and the ICAC Most Valuable Player. He was a four-year all-league selection.

Pierce '91 was a three-time All America in lacrosse and helped St. Lawrence to three straight NCAA appearances including back-to-back trips to the final four. An outstanding defensive midfielder who also played soccer during her SLU career, Pierce was a key component in a defense which helped her teams go 48-13 in her four years. She was a first-team regional All America and all-state player in each her sophomore, junior and senior seasons and earned second team national All-America honors as a sophomore and senior.

One of the first regional Academic All America selections in Saint tennis history, Leah Walbourn Warner '98 also had an outstanding career on the courts, playing at the top of the Saint lineup throughout her four-year career. A four-year all-league player at singles or doubles, Leah captained the 1997-98 team which went 9-5 and finished fourth in New York State. She was a Presidential Scholar and earned all academic honors throughout her career. She was the Outstanding Senior Scholar Athlete Award winner as a senior and a Summa Cum Laude graduate.
