St. Lawrence University sophomore goalkeeper Julia Hudson turned in a solid performance in her first collegiate start, but 17th-ranked William Smith College blanketed the Saint offense in a 2-0 Liberty League field hockey win in Geneva on Saturday.
Hudson made six saves for the Saints, but SLU managed just two shots overall and none on goal as it went 0-2 on a very challenging opening weekend of league play. William Smith improved to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the league while the Saints are now 3-6 and 0-2 in league play.
Hannah Wood scored the only goal of the first half for the Herons, her 11th of the year, at 30:48. She beat a Saint defender and went one-on-one against the goaltender, tucking the ball past Hudson for the early lead.
The Herons added an insurance goal 6:07 into the second half as Wood made a cross cage pass that Alessandria Patrizio tipped home for her third of the year.
William Smith outshot the Saints 18-2 with a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Herons had six corners and the Saints none. Catherine Hare did not make a save in earning the win in goal for William Smith.
The Saints will play their Liberty League home opener on Oct. 4 when they host Rensselaer.
