Saints fall to Vassar in women's basketball league play

Sophomore Katie Frederick recorded her ninth double-double of the season and two other Saints scored double digits, but four consistent quarters led the Vassar Brewers to a 71-63 win over the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium.

Frederick shot 9-for-17 from the floor and scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Annabella Pugliese and Erin Kumler also recorded double figures for the Saints, scoring 14 and 10 points respectively. First-year Dylan Watkiss finished with a team-best two steals and six assists.

St. Lawrence took an early lead in the first quarter, but the Brewers rallied quicky after a free throw from Jackie Cenan tied the game and a 3-pointer from Isa Peczuh gave Vassar a 15-12 lead. The Saints battled within one multiple times but the Brewers held a 21-18 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

Despite a comeback attempt from the Saints in the second, Vassar maintained its lead throughout the quarter and posted a 40-33 lead at the half.

The Scarlet and Brown edged the Saints 18-17 in the third, but were unable to overcome the first half deficit and the Brewers held their lead throughout the final frame and sealed the win with back-to-back-toback layups from Peczuh and Ryan DeOrio.

"I'm really proud of our effort and intensity today," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We brought a lot of energy and played very hard. Our defense broke down too many times today and that ended up costing us. Vassar runs a good, fast offense and we were confused too often which resulted in baskets. It's not for lack of effort, but we need more experience. It was a fun game between two balanced teams, but they got us today."

Cenan (5-12), DeOrio (7-10) and Peczuh, who shot 6-for-9 and 3-for-6 from the arc led the Brewers with 15 points each, while Cenan and Maddie Leong grabbed a team-best seven rebounds each.

Vassar combined to shoot 46.6 percent to the Saints 38.6 and managed 15 points off turnovers.

The Saints fell to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Brewers improved to 10-2 and 4-1.

St. Lawrence will hit the road to face Ithaca and Union on January 11 and 12, respectively. Game times are set for 5 p.m. and 2 p.m.
