CANTON--St. Lawrence University's men's soccer team erupted for four goals in a span of 17:21, three of them in under five minutes, and completed a sweep of their first home weekend of the season with a 5-1 win over Elmira College at Sandy MacAllaster Field Saturday afternoon.

The Saints, now 4-2, dominated play from the outset and had their biggest day of the year thus far in terms of production with the big second half. SLU had a 38-11 overall edge in shots including a 18-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints also had eight corner kicks to four for Elmira.

"It would have been nice to keep a clean sheet, but it was a decent weekend for us...putting the ball in the back of the net is a big help," said Saint coach Bob Durocher. "We still gave the ball away a little too much, but it didn't come back to hurt us." 

Saint captain James Stewart scored the only goal of the first half, connecting 14:36 into play when his long shot from outside the box went into the upper right corner of the net despite the effort of Elmira goalie Jared Micheller, who got a hand on the ball, but couldn't keep it out of the net.

St. Lawrence started its flurry of goals at the 61:03 mark when senior Emmanuel Mbong carried the ball up the right side and sent a cross into the goal area where sophomore midfielder Sam DeMello volleyed it out of the air for his third goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

The Saints went well into their bench in Saturday's game, playing 24 players in the game and two of the second half goals were scored by reserves.

Sophomore Brenton Jones scored his first career goal with a point blank shot after a cross by Dan Marvin following a Saint throw-in at the 73:28 mark and the Saints scored twice more in the next 4:56 to blow it wide open. Junior starter Brendan Gorman scored his first of the season and the 21st  of his career at 74:05, beating Micheller one-on-one from in close after Tyler McCune's hard tackle sprung the ball free and right to Gorman deep in the Elmira end and JJ Tipton took a short pass from freshman Andrew Chan and tapped it into the center of the net at 78:24. 

Elmira's Cameron Ware foiled Saint goalie Nate Goss-Woliner's bid for a second straight shutout when he shot and scored from the center of the box from Jason Guernsey at 87:20 after a Soaring Eagle corner kick.

Goss-Woliner finished with four saves in the game while Micheller had 15 for Elmira, which is 2-2-1 on the season.
