Nadine Edney scored with just 47.8 seconds remaining in regulation, and Sonjia Shelly made 27 saves to lift the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over Rensselaer on Friday night at Houston Field House in Troy, New York.
Edney picked up a pass from Amanda McClure at center ice and skated around a defender at the blue line before firing a shot wide of the net off the end boards. The puck rebounded out to the left side, and Edney picked up her own rebound and fired it past RPI goaltender Lovisa Selander for the game's only goal.
Shelly was perfect in net to pick up her first shutout of the season. Selander made 32 saves, as the Saints held a 33-27 edge in shots on goal.
"To say those were two very important points is a monster understatement," said Saints' head coach Chris Wells '92. "We were able to finally get one past Selander on a goofy bounce off the back boards. We fought hard tonight, especially in the second half of the game."
Both teams had excellent scoring chances the game's final minutes. Kennedy Marchment, who also picked up an assist on Edney's goal, maneuvered around a defender to create an opening with just over five mintues to play, but Selander made the save to keep the game scoreless.
Kalie Grant followed with a wrist shot from the left circle a minute later that Selander caught in her glove.
Shelly played the hero with just under two minutes to play, stopping two shots on a break to preserve the shutout and set up Edney's heroics.
St. Lawrence, ranked eighth nationally, improved to 8-6-3 overall, 5-3-1 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Engineers fell to 7-8-4, 4-2-1.
The Saints will face Union in their final game before exams and the holiday break on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Schenectady.
