ONEONTA -- Hannah Mackey scored three goals, two of them in a span of just over three minutes in the first half, leading Utica College to a 5-1 NCAA Division III field hockey win over St. Lawrence University in the season opener for both on Saturday.
The Saints, 0-1, will play Oneonta at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in their second game of the weekend.
Utica outshot the Saints 16-8 overall and 12-5 on goal and while the Saints had a 10-6 edge in penalty corners, Utica built a 5-0 lead before the Saints could crack the scoreboard.
Mackey opened the scoring 13;36 into the game as she dribbled around the defense and put a shot past Saint starting goalie Kim Haab, who had four saves and allowed four goals in 35 minutes of action. Mackey struck again 16:58 into play, dodging a defender before scoring her second of the day.
Chastity Eckert gave Utica a 3-0 lead from Alaini Stojovski with 21:08 gone and Mackey completed her hat trick from Melissa Koch, redirecting Koch's centering pass into the goal with 1:07 left in the first half.
Louise Steele-Newton greeted Saint second half goalie Julia Hudson with a breakaway 3:09 into the half to make it 5-0, but Hudson shut down Utica the rest of the way with three saves.
Saint newcomer Olivia White scored her first collegiate goal on a rebound at 62:43 for the lone Saint goal of the day.
Casey Kells made four saves on four shots in 53 minutes of action for Utica while Samantha Whitehouse gave up the goal on the only shot she saw in the game
