Saints down Hawks, fall to Thoroughbreds in volleyball

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team posted a well-rounded effort in their 3-1 win over Hunter College, posting 102 digs and hitting .279 in the victory. The Saints would later fall to Skidmore College 3-0 in the final game of the Skidmore Classic in Saratoga Springs, NY.

St. Lawrence went 2-2 on the weekend and moves to 18-9 on the season.

In the first match of the day, the Saints defeated the Hunter College Hawks in four sets (25-19, 25-10, 23-25, 25-17). Leading the Saints to the victory were captains Abby Rose and Nyasha Miiller. Rose compiled 48 assists, three service aces and 20 digs, while Miller contributed 13 kills and 23 digs. Junior Liz Grogan added 13 kills for the Scarlet and Brown.

Senior Lauren Drozynski also helped pace the Saint offense with 12 kills on errorless hitting (.480), while first-year student Katie Prue held down the Saints defense with 23 digs.

Facing a tough Skidmore College squad, the Saints were downed in three straight sets (14-25, 25-27, 15-25). Leading the Saints offense were Miller and Grogan with nine kills apiece, while Rose contributed 33 assists. Senior Jordyn Buzza and junior Marta Johann also added six and seven kills, respectively.

Working to contain the Thoroughbred hitting was defensive specialist Katherine Pierce with 9 digs, while Rose also contributed 9 digs in the Saints' effort.

The volleyball team will host Plattsburgh State this Tuesday, October 23rd in the Burkman Gymnasium. The match is slated to begin at 6:00 pm.
