POTSDAM--After a 1-1 tie at the half, the St. Lawrence University

Saints scored five times to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men’s soccer team 6-1.

Sophomore midfielder Alex Laird (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) led the Saints’ charge with two goals, while junior midfielder A.J. Ramirez (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) scored for the Bears.

After a relatively even start to the match, St. Lawrence jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 16:34 mark, as Laird headed in a corner kick from junior forward Sean Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep). After the goal the Potsdam defense tightened up, allowing the offense to create some opportunities.

Less than six minutes later, senior forward Bobby Kane (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) took the ball into the Saints right corner and sent a long cross into the box for Ramirez to even the score. In the 40th minute, Glackin tipped a direct kick from sophomore midfielder Sam DeMello (Easthampton, Mass./Williston Northampton) over the crossbar, keeping the score tied heading into halftime.

Bears Head Coach Adam Parker was happy with the Bears first half performance.

“We knew this was going to be one of the most athletic teams we’ll play this season and this was as good a first half as we’ve played so far,” said Parker. “I couldn’t have been happier with it. Unfortunately, in the second half we made some mental errors that led to goals and we kind of let up from there.”

St. Lawrence started fast in the second half. Laird scored on a shot from the left side of the box in the 50th minute for the eventual game winner.

At 54:23, Saints’ junior forward Dan Marvin (Bow, N.H./Holderness) tipped a cross from junior forward Brendan Gorman (Ottawa, Ontario/St. Matthew’s) past Glackin for a 3-1 lead. In the 70th minute, Gorman set up DeMello who connected on a shot from the top of the box. After a St. Lawrence corner kick in the 79th minute, senior forward Emmanuel Mbong (Norman, Okla./Norman) buried a pass from sophomore forward Brian Gilloran (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) for a four goal advantage. The Saints closed out the scoring in the 86th minute as freshman forward Adrian Bucksam (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Francis Xavier) scored on a shot from the top of the box after a pass from freshman defender Riley Webb (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo).

Glackin finished with eight saves for the Bears, while St. Lawrence

sophomore goalkeeper Nate Goss-Woliner (Waitsfield, Vt./Kimball Union) didn’t make a save to get the win for the Saints (6-2-1).

The Bears (1-7-1) hit the road again for two SUNY conference games this weekend. On Oct. 1, Potsdam heads to Cortland for a 4 p.m. match against the Red Dragons. On Oct. 2, the Bears take on the Oswego Lakers at 1 p.m.
