St. Lawrence University quarterback Mike Lefflbine threw three touchdown passes and sophomore James Holley-Grisham had a team-high 10 tackles and two interceptions, leading the Saints to a thorough 24-10 victory over Rensselaer at East Campus Stadium on Saturday. The win is the first in Troy, NY for St. Lawrence since the 1986 season, ending a 13-game skid in the Capital District.

The Saints remain tied atop the Liberty League standings with an unblemished 3-0 mark and are now 5-1 overall heading into the bye week. Rensselaer, whichturned the ball over four times on Saturday, falls to 4-2 (2-1).

"That was a great team win for us, as I thought we played very tough and physical," said St. Lawrence head coach Mark Raymond. "Our kicking game again played a major factor in a victory for us."

St. Lawrence scored 24 straight points after trailing 3-0 to seize control of the game, as RPI's offense sputtered throughout most of the second half with starting quarterback Jeff Avery out due to injury. Though the Engineers scored a touchdown in the final minutes to close the scoring gap, the team was held to 3-of-16 passing as the Saints secondary shut them down. St. Lawrence finished with a 377-245 advantage in total yardage and never allowed RPI to enter the red zone while finishing 4-of-7 scoring inside the 20.

Lefflbine had another solid outing, as he was 20-of-35 passing for 223 yards, the three scores and one interception. Mitch Gallagher caught a touchdown for the fourth straight game, and finished as the game's leading receiver with 73 yards. Matt Gardiner and Leondre Simmon also had touchdown grabs for the Scarlet and Brown.

Rensselaer's Andrew Franks converted a 43-yard field goal to give the Engineers the 3-0 lead during the team's Homecoming Game midway through the first quarter. Andrew Carvalho tied it a 3-3 on the ensuing drive from 20-yards out after RPI's defense held at the 3-yard line, but a fumble for Rensselaer's Reggie Colas on the kickoff gave St. Lawrence possession at the home team's 19-yard line. After moving to the 8-yard line, Lefflbine found Gallagher for the go-ahead touchdown, with Carvalho's extra point making it 10-3 with :20 seconds left in the quarter.

That would be all of the scoring in the first half, as Philip Lanieri III picked off Lefflbine in the end zone in the final minute of the quarter to keep the Engineers within striking distance down just seven at intermission.

As RPI continued to struggle to move the ball, St. Lawrence capitalized on back-to-back touchdown drives to pull away in the third quarter. After a three-and-out by the home team, Lefflbine connected with Gallagher for 23 yards, Maurice Irby added 11 more on the ground and St. Lawrence set up at the RPI 23. From there, Lefflbine delivered a strike to Simmon in the end zone for an insurance touchdown, as Carvalho added the point after for a 17-3 advantage only 3:54 into the second half.

Holley-Grisham made his second interception of the game on a long pass by Tommy Morgan, giving his offense the ball back after just three plays. A healthy dose of Irby moved the chains and the ball on a 12-play, 72-yard drive that was capped by a great play call, as Gardiner delayed his route, making him a wide open target to Lefflbine's left for an easy 12-yard touchdown. Carvalho added the extra point for the 24-3 cushion.

The turnovers continued for RPI on the next drive, as Morgan fumbled and Dillon Knight recovered to allow St. Lawrence to again run more clock off. Though St. Lawrence missed two field goal attempts in the fourth quarter and Morgan found Joey Giacone for a 31-yard touchdown, the Saints were able to cruise to the 24-10 conference road win.

St. Lawrence, which is tied for the conference lead with nationally-ranked #8 Hobart, will return to Leckonby Stadium on Saturday, October 25 to host Springfield College in the annual Homecoming Game. Kick-off between the Saints and Pride is scheduled for 1:00pm.
