Roo volleyball sweeps SLU to open Canton Classic

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team used a tremendous comeback in the final set to sweep host St. Lawrence University, 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-23) at Burkman Gymnasium to open the Canton Classic on Friday.

Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) led the Roos with 11 kills and a .450 hitting percentage, while Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) added eight putdowns on a .350 hitting percentage. Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ON) posted six kills on a match-best .462 hitting percentage. Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) assisted a match-high 27 kills.

SUNY Canton stormed out to a 16-3 lead in the opening set forcing two Saint timeouts in the first 19 points of the match. The Roos took the first frame in commanding fashion 25-10.

The Roos opened the second set scoring 15 of the first 17 points to take a two set lead, 25-8. St. Lawrence used its home court crowd to open up a 10-0 lead in the third set and extended that to 13-1. SUN Canton responded with seven consecutive points forcing a SLU timeout at 13-8.

St. Lawrence clung to a 23-22 lead late in the third stanza but three consecutive points, two off kills from Reynolds and the other from Bills, gave the Roos the set and match, 25-23.

The women's volleyball team will host day two of the Canton Classic at the Roos House on Saturday. SUNY Canton squares off with Rochester Institute of Technology at 11:00 a.m. before a 1:00 p.m. tilt with Hartwick College.
