Roos softball tripped up by Cal Baptist in national tournament opener

(Gulf Shores, Ala.)- SUNY Canton fell to California Baptist University 11-0 in their first game of the 2011 NAIA Softball national tournament at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Roos (20-14) will battle MidAmerica Nazarene University (Kan.) in their second game of pool play on Friday at 4:30 p.m. EST.

The Roos got off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning when Lyndsay Coppola (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) laced a two-out single to left field and then moved into scoring position at second base after a Cal Baptist error.  But the Lancers ended the threat striking out the next Roos' batter.

Cal Baptist (60-3), who have occupied the top spot in the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 poll the entire season, pushed across two runs in the second inning and then took control of the contest with a nine-run third inning.

The Roos made a strong effort to continue the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Danielle Callahan (Kingston, N.Y.) ripped a single to right field and then with two outs, Tina DeLuca (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) knocked a single up the middle.  Emiley Walters (Lancaster, N.Y.) then loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch on the Roos' next at-bat.  But the Lancers' again got out of a jam when they got the next batter to line out at first and end the game.

DeLuca took the loss on the mound as the sophomore allowed 11 hits and four walks.

Nicole Shoemaker belted a two-run home run to lead Cal Baptist, who face Friends University (Kan.) in their second game on Friday.  Lindsay Henry and Kendall Gorham each doubled and the Lancers used three pitchers in the game who combined for nine strikeouts.
