(Canton, N.Y.)- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has released the pool play schedule for the 2011 Softball National Championship May 19-25 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex in Gulf Shores, Ala.
SUNY Canton is one of seven teams making their first appearance in the national tournament and will face top-ranked California Baptist (59-3) on the opening day at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. On Friday, May 20 the Roos take on MidAmerica Nazarene University (Kan.) at 3:30 p.m., and they’ll wrap up pool play against Friends University (Kan.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 21.
The 32 qualifiers will all play three games in pool play action that spans three days. There are eight pools composed of four teams each, with the pool winners advancing to an eight-team double-elimination bracket that will be played out May 23 – 24. There are four fields with four games each day during pool play action. The 2011 champion will be crowned on May 25 from the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
The current field is comprised of 27 automatic qualifiers based upon their conference/independent/unaffiliated group tournaments, four at-large selections, which were determined using the final Top 25 rating released Tuesday and the host berth awarded to Mobile.
SUNY Canton earned their ticket to Alabama by winning the Sunrise Conference championship for the second year in a row.
