Alfred, NY – Chloe Solomon (Cold Spring, NY) led the Roos with 3 RBI including driving in a pair in the opener to lift the SUNY Canton softball team to a split on the road at Alfred State College on Saturday. The Roos (9-10) took the opener 2-1, before the Pioneers (5-22) came back for a 10-5 win in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Box Score

Neither team was able to get on the board over the first four innings in what proved to be a pitcher's duel. The Roos struck for two runs in the top half of the fifth. Rachel Thornhill (Heuvelton, NY) led off legging out an infield single to third and advanced to second on a throwing error. Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) moved Thornhill over to third on a base hit to center and stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position for Solomon. The senior came through with a 2 RBI double to center field, and that one swing would be enough to win the opener for SUNY Canton.

Alfred State added one run in the bottom of the fifth on a one out RBI double to left from Gibson. The Pioneers tried to tie the game later in the inning but some strong defense from the Roos ended the rally.

With one out Allison Gibson was put out in a rundown between third and home as Shannon Dowling (Oneida, NY), Thornhill, Solomon and Jaedyn Ossont (Turin, NY) teamed up to record the putout. With two outs in the inning, Stormi Kruger singled to right but Desiree Pryce (Madrid, NY) made a great throw to the plate to gun down Claire Hartman who was trying to score from second base ending the inning.

The Pioneers got one runner on in the sixth and seventh innings but the game would end on a double play as the Roos earned the win.

Jordan Podkladek (Gansevoort, NY) gave up just one earned run over seven innings throwing a complete game to improve to 6-4 on the season. Jordan Leonard took the loss giving up two earned over seven innings.

Game 2 – Box Score

Alfred State jumped out to an early lead with one run in the bottom of the first. SUNY Canton gained a 2-1 lead in the top half of the third as Solomon singled home Coad, who reached on a fielder's choice after Thornhill started the inning with a one out single. Solomon later scored as Kaleigh Foran (Fort Ann, NY) reached on an error by the center fielder.

The Pioneers regained the lead in the bottom of the frame with five runs and added two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Roos scored one run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the 10-5 final. Foran reached once again in the fifth on a throwing error by the shortstop to score Coad. Stefanie Miller (Latham, NY) singled home Ossont in the sixth and Ossont's fielder's choice in the seventh plated Solomon.

Annie Sharlow (Malone, NY) took the loss in game two giving up just three earned runs. Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY) scattered four hits and four earned runs over two innings in relief. Tonia Tinker earned her second win of the season for Alfred State.

The Roos are back in action on Sunday when they visit SUNY Delhi for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
